So, you're loving your hair extensions and you want them to last forever. I wish I could say that were possible! Unfortunately, they will eventually have to be replaced or removed. That said, you can definintely influence the longevity and vitality of your human hair extensions by taking these 10 tips to heart.
1. Shampoo with care, at least 1x a week.
Shampooing your extentensions will help prevent oils from building up on the scalp near their base in the attachment zone. Be gentle here, no rough scrubbing, just 'press' and 'squeeze' shampoo through your hair. Waiting a couple of days to shampoo after your extensions are serviced is also recommended.
2. Don't overcondition.
Work conditioner into your hair, taking care to not apply conditioner to the base of your extensions. Focus your efforts primarily on the mid-shaft and ends of your hair only.
3. Rinse thoroughly.
Leaving residues in your hair will shorten the life of your extensions, so what goes in, must come out! Gently squeeze excess water out.
4. Don't go to bed with a wet head.
If you shower at night, be sure to dry your hair thoroughly.
5. Ease back on the heat.
When possible, air dry your hair. If you must blow dry, use a diffuser and take your time to not stress your hair or extensions. Take care with flat irons, and avoid using them in the attachement zone.
6. Brush with a light hand.
To brush,be sure to not 'pull' on the extension as you hold it firmly in place. Work your way from mid shaft down to the ends. We supply our clients with special looped brushes that are great for working out tangles.
7. Avoid chemical treatments.
Refrain from using any colorants or chemical treatments on your extensions. This includes perms and relaxers of course, both big no no's.
8. Braid or pull up hair before bed.
Keeping your hair tame throughout the night will keep tangles to a minimum and ultimately make maintanance far easier.
9. Rinse after swimming!
Be sure to remove chlorine from the pool or salt water from your hair if you swim in the ocean. Both of these elements can shorten the life of your extensions.
10. Schedule a service.
A service should be scheduled every 6 to 8 weeks to remove and reattach your extensions closer to the scalp.
Following those 10 tips will definitely help keep your extensions healthy for many months. Aside from that, just generally love on them like you love on your hair! Any other questions, feel free to leave a comment or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
